Hundreds braved the chilly weather and rain for Village at Leesburg’s winter Ice Fest Jan. 14, as eight world-class ice carvers competed in conjunction with 3rd Annual Mega Block Ice Carving Competition. The competition began at 9 a.m. and continued until dark, with Todd Dawson of Raleigh, North Carolina, winning first place and $2000 with his work “Angelic Bird.” Dawson finished as the runner-up in 2016 and placed first in 2015. Jess Parrish and Angelito Baban finished second and third respectively. The top three sculptors were recognized in a ceremony featuring WINC FM’s Lisa Herndon, Leesburg Mayor and Village at Leesburg’s Senior Director of Marketing Staci Harris. The sculptures will remain in the Village Plaza until they melt or have to be safely dismantled, according to Harris.
